The Treaty of Roast Pork and Turkey

So I decided today it was about time I start a blog and show you folks I am not all air pudding and wind pie :o)

Here is my first drop in the pot as they say at sharing some interesting Barbados history with all of you Barbados fans. All of my post will not be on history. Some will be jokes some trivia and informative facts, but I will do my best to keep it interesting.

The Treaty of Roast Pork and Turkey

During The English Civil War 1641–1651 was a series of armed conflicts and political machinations between Parliamentarians and Royalists.

Those who supported the Royalist were called "Cavaliers" and those supporting the Parliament were called "Roundheads"

During the civil war misfortune was seen by both the Cavaliers and the Roundheads. Thus refugees from both sides began to come to Barbados to escape the strife and rebuild their fortunes.
It is in this time Barbados began calling itself "Little England" The new settlers were determined to rebuild the fortunes they had lost in England and this brought Barbados increased activity and prosperity. They also brought with them the dissensions and difficulties they hoped to leave behind them in England.

For a time all went well in Barbados the Cavaliers and Roundheads agreed to Abide by the "Treaty of Turkey and Roast Pork". According to this anyone who mentioned the words Cavalier or Roundhead was required to provide a young hog and a turkey which was to be eaten at the offenders house by all those who had heard him utter the forbidden words.

Sometimes the treaty was deliberately broken to give the gentlemen of both sides an excuse to enjoy one another's company.

Thats a Barbadian for you always looking for a reason to throw a party :o)
